Overview

NaphCare is hiring an Optometrist to join our team of medical professionals at the San Diego County Jail located in San Diego, CA.

 

As a Correctional Optometrist you will work alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals to exam, diagnose, and treat vision problems and eye diseases of the individuals in residence. This is a unique position where you can make a difference to this diverse population of patients with complex medical needs.

Responsibilities

The Optometrist is responsible for performing comprehensive eye exams, prescribing corrective lenses, managing eye conditions and referring patients to specialists when necessary. Responsibilities may include and are not limited to:

  • Maintain overall optometry care to each patient, including those provided by consultants of offsite resources
  • Perform all optometry examinations using observation, instruments, and pharmaceutical agents to determine visual acuity and perception, focus, coordination and to diagnose diseases of the eye and other abnormalities.
  • Formulate a working diagnosis, develop and implement a treatment plan, and evaluate/modify therapeutic regimens
  • Evaluate all patients returning from offsite optometry visits
  • Prescribe, fit and adjust eye glasses
  • Provide visual hygiene and safety education to all patients

 

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Valid National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) licensure in STATE
  • A Valid CPR card
  • Ability to diagnose and manage various eye conditions, requiring strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience utilizing optometric tools and specialized equipment
  • Must possess strong written communication and verbal skills, adaptable to environments where conditions may not be pristine, and manage and maintain in stressful situations
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information and integrity, professionalism and ability to adhere to a Code of Conduct and comply with all facility(s) correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements
  • Must pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening

Qualifications

Physical Capabilities:

Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
